Damage and Needs Assessment is a tool utilized post –disaster as a human recovery needs assessment. The damage, loss and economic impacts on the affected economy/ livelihoods and the short, medium and long-term recovery and reconstruction needs.
An Initial Damage Assessment is carried out to obtain an initial overview of the damages sustained in the aftermath of a disaster. The DMU in tandem with the Ministry of Social Development and Family Services, collect this information in order to determine what losses the person/s would have suffered in order to provide support.
National Commission for Self Help is a non-profit entity that assists in alleviating poverty and improving the quality of life for citizens of Trinidad and Tobago. There are several grants which can be accessed through this agency whereby the DMU provides referral letters to the victims of disaster who cannot afford to return their life to normalcy. Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) is a volunteer system where persons within the community are trained in particular fields to be able to respond within their community. First Aid training is usually held in tandem with the Red Cross Society.
